Congratulations Dunfermline Carnegie BC on being 100 years old this year!
The club has had a few venues through the years – Bruce Street Drill Hall, Elgin Street Drill Hall, Rosyth Institute to name some of them. On looking through the club records a number of familiar names from the past are mentioned – David Gow, Hunter Prain, Fraser Gow, Joanna Flockhart, George Stenhouse to name a few.
Hunter Prain was present at the first Dunfermline Badminton Association AGM in 1949, and eventually became Hon President, a post he held until he died in 1998 at the age of 96.
David Gow was SBU President in 1983, President of the DBA and Midland Convener.
Fraser Gow and Joanna Flockhart were outstanding Scottish internationalists who represented their country many times.
George Stenhouse is still playing badminton for Dunfermline Carnegie and in his seventies gained his first cap for Scotland. He is a stalwart of the club and the DBA, and continues to be the man in charge of handing out the shuttles at the Dunfermline Open.
To celebrate their 100th birthday in April this year they ran a fun tournament for club members which was enjoyed by all with appropriate prizes that all mentioned 100.
In November they had a night out with a 100 birthday cake.
Within every club there is always someone who goes above and beyond in their dedication and commitment to the club. In Carnegie this is Pam Turner, who has not only coached and run the junior club but organised the senior club, its teams and social events for many years. Pam organised the 100 year celebrations and in her words “ We greatly enjoy our badminton so here’s to the next 100 years”.
