Disappointment for Scotland at U17 Europeans
The U17 European Team Championships always looked like it would be a tough challenge for Scotland’s youngsters when the draw pitted them in group 2 with Germany, Ukraine and Slovakia.
First up was a clash with a strong Ukrainian side on Friday afternoon, followed by a match-up with second seeds Germany on Saturday.
Scotland lost both matches 5-0 although Lindsey Ireland pushed Germany’s Florentine Schoffski close in the girls’ singles, taking the first set 21-16 and holding match points in the second before ultimately going down to a 16-21 26-24 21-15 defeat.
Ireland was involved in two more three-setters on Sunday against Slovakia.
She beat Sofia Slosiarikova 21-19 21-23 21-19 in the singles but went down to a 21-14 14-21 21-16 defeat in the girls’ doubles with Jodie Black.
Lewis Hart lost out to Simeon Suchy in a close three-set boy’s singles but Euan Campbell and Callum Stokes beat Boris Karpjak and Peter Radoczi 21-13 21-19 in the boys’ doubles.
But in the deciding mixed doubles, Isaac Weir and Brooke Stalker lost out to Suchy and Slosiarikova
21-11 21-16.
Scotland’s players will now turn their attention to the Individual events starting tomorrow.
