Double bronze for Mary Wilson in Australia
While Kirsty Gilmour was wowing the crowds on her way to the top step of the podium at the Emirates Arena last week, Scotland’s top female para-badminton shuttler was on an antipodean adventure.
Mary Wilson was competing in women’s singles, doubles and mixed at the Australian Para-Badminton International Championships, being held in Geelong, Victoria, from 22-25 November.
She finished second in Group B to progress to the knock-out stages of the SL4-SU5 women’s singles. Defeat to Hong Kong’s Tsz Huen Lam ended her singles campaign, but by then she had done enough to secure her spot on the podium.
A similar story unfolded in the women’s doubles where, partnering Australia’s Caitlin Dransfield, Wilson finished second in the group to reach the knockout stages before losing out to the tops seeds.
Although it was a less successful mixed doubles campaign, where Wilson and England’s Antony Foster were only able to win one of their group matches, two bronze medals certainly made the 20,000 mile round trip worthwhile.
