Dundee Area Badminton: December Round Up

By Gordon Smith

Report for week ending 11 December 2023.

It was the final round of fixtures before the festive break in the T Duncan & Co Gents and ladies doubles leagues.

Nomads ladies moved to the top of the table with a 5-0 win v Dundee University. Susie Roberts and Pauline Mclean were the top players with 3 win each, with Susie’s 3 wins taking her to the top of the rankings.

In the other ladies fixture, David Lloyd had an excellent 5-1 local derby win v Monifieth Grove. Christie Laird and Annie Mcartney were the stars in this one with 3 wins each.

In the Gents league Division 1, Kirriemuir edged out Roseangle 3-2. This was level pegging until the final round of fixtures with a 21-14, 21-18 win by Lachlan Mulford and Graham Russo in the final game clinching the victory.

In Gents Division 2, Nomads 2 were a player short and Lunchtime took advantage to secure their first victory with a 3-1 win, although the couple of draws they gained to secure victory were hard earned, both going to tie breaks.

In Gents Division 3, Dundee University also gained their first victory, with an excellent 3-1 win v David Lloyd 2. This was another match that went to the last round of games with both being very close and a 21-18, 22-20 win in the final game by Andrei Macarie and Ko Ujita proving decisive.

The other Division 3 match was even closer with 5 draws between Carnoustie and Monifieth Grove 2nd teams and a single 21-11, 21-10 win by Carnoustie’s Ross Wiseman and Graham Angus clinching a narrow 1-0 victory.

In the T Duncan & Co mixed league Division 1, leaders Nomads are looking very strong and extended their lead at the top of the table with a convincing 8-0 win v Roseangle.

Division 2 has new leaders again with Carnoustie Panbride powering their way to the top of the table with 2 wins. First up was a convincing 8-0 win v Dundee University 3. This was followed by a top of the table clash against Nomads 3 which was expected to be a close affair, but the Angus side ran out comfortable 6-0 winners.

It was close enough early on with draws in both Gents doubles, but 2 wins in the ladies and 4 in the mixed followed for Carnoustie to make it 5 wins from 5 in the league. The experienced pair of Maria Boyd and Theresa Lapadula were the Carnoustie crackers with 3 wins apiece, with Maria moving top of the rankings.
