Dundee Area Badminton: October Round Ups
By Gordon Smith
Monday 16 October
The mixed league Division 2 took centre stage this week with a couple of matches.
First up was an intriguing affair between newcomers David Lloyd and Carnoustie Panbride who suffered relegation from Division 1 the previous season. It was the newcomers who took an early lead winning the opening ladies doubles but found themselves 2-1 down after the level doubles before levelling, by winning the opening mixed doubles. 3 wins in a row for Carnoustie thereafter proved pivotal with a 21-11, 21-12 win by Joe Spink and Alison Mackenzie clinching what in the end was an exciting 5-3 win. Christie Lloyd of David Lloyd will consider herself unlucky to be on the losing side following her 3 wins.
The other match in the Division was a much more straightforward affair with a strong Nomads 3 side triumphing 9-0 v St Andrews University.
Scores
- Mixed Division 2
- David Lloyd 3 Carnoustie Panbride 5

It was the turn of the Gents and ladies doubles league to get underway in the Dundee Area Badminton season with the opening matches at David Lloyd.
In the Gents First Division, last season’s bottom side NCR escaped relegation due to increases in the size of the leagues, but a new look side started off strongly this season with an excellent 5-1 win over recent champions Kirriemuir. Ross Gilmartin and Robert Adamson starred with 3 wins each.
Carnoustie were the other team in the First Division to get off to a winning start with a 4-0 win over newly promoted David Lloyd. There were quite a few tight games in this one, with victory not being secured until the final round of games.
In Gents Division 2, Forfar look like strong candidates for a 2nd successive promotion and started their campaign very well with a 5-0 win v newcomers Kirriemuir 2. Jamie King and Kyle Dugoid were on top form with 3 wins each.
In the Gents Division 3, Carnoustie 2 made a welcome return to the leagues and a winning one at that, triumphing v David Lloyd 2. This was close early on with Carnoustie taking a narrow 2-1 lead into the final round of games, but won the final two for a 4-1 winning scoreline.
In the ladies league, Monifieth Grove are the early leaders following a convincing 6-0 win v Dundee University.
Carnoustie join them level on points at the top after they triumphed 3-0 v David Lloyd in a close affair. The win was clinched in the penultimate game with a 21-12, 21-18 win by Fiona Cameron and Alison Mackenzie. Alison was on cracking form for Carnoustie with 3 wins.

The Dundee Area Badminton season is underway.
On Saturday the first DABA ladder of the 2023-24 season was held at Dundee International Sports Centre. There was a good turnout with 24 couples taking part and some great badminton played.

In Division 3 Monifieth Grove got off to an excellent start with a 9-0 home win v Abertay University.
