Dundee Area Badminton: Round Up

The T Duncan & Co ladies league is looking very strong this year and there was a cracking seaside derby between Carnoustie and Monifieth Grove which ended in a deserved share of the spoils. Louise Masey and Ellen Watson secured the draw for Monifeth Grove with a 21-12, 21-16 win in the final game. Maria Woolfries was in cracking form for Carnoustie with 3 wins to help her side move to the top of the table.
Champions NCR moved up to 2nd place with a 6-0 win over Dundee University, although there were a few close games and the students were a bit unfortunate to not pick up one or two draws.
In the Gents league Division 1, Nomads kept up their 100% record with a 4-0 win v Kirriemuir, although this one wasn’t settled until the final round of games. Richard Steven and John Lowrence were on top form for the reigning champions with 3 wins each, with John moving to the top of the rankings.
In Division 2, there was a close affair between Lunchtime Badminton and NCR 2, which ended in a 2-2 draw. There were 2 draws in the opening games, then wins apiece as the sides couldn’t be separated. 2 wins and a draw for Lunchtime’s Iain Martin moved him to the top of the rankings with 4 other payers a point behind.
Forfar 2 maintained their 100% record and leadership of Division 2, but it was a close affair as they edged out Dundee University 3-2, with a 21-14, 21-11 win by A J Govier and Luke Munro in the penultimate game clinching it for the Angus side. 2 wins and a draw moved A J clear at the top of the rankings.
The mixed league Division 2 is likely to be interesting this season, with at least 4 sides in with a shout of the title. Nomads 3 had their 2nd win in a row with a 7-1 victory v Dundee University 3, although the students did take an early lead with a win in the opening game. Bob Iannetta and Jason Cheng were the top players with 3 wins each.
