Dundee Area Badminton: Round Up
In the T Duncan & Co Gents league Division 1, reigning champions Nomads kept up their 100% record at the top of the table with a hard fought 3-1 win v Kirriemuir. In an exciting match, this one went to the wire, with the league leaders clinching victory in the final game with a 21-19, 21-9 win by Bob Paton and Johnny Reeve.
NCR are still hot on their heels though and remained 2 points behind following a convincing 5-0 win v Roseangle. Ross Gilmartin and Robert Adamson were on top form for the victors with 3 wins each.
In Division 2, Kirriemuir 2 remain in 2nd place after a narrow 2-1 victory v NCR 2. It was level pegging going into the final round of games with a 21-16, 22-20 win by Callum Callander and Joe Farquharson proving decisive.
Monifieth Grove edged out Nomads 2 4-2, with Nomads being hampered by only having 3 eligible players. They took the result to the last game however, but a 21-19, 21-15 win by Gordon Smith and Karampal Sidhu clinched it for the Grove.
In Division 3, David Lloyd 2 had an excellent 4-1 win v Forfar 2, which puts a dent in Forfar’s title chances. The hosts only held a 2-1 win going into the last 2 games, but were triumphant in both to give them the victory.
In the very exciting ladies league, Nomads moved back to the top of the table with a 4-1 win v Monifieth Grove. Susie Roberts was the star player with 3 wins, which also takes her level at the top of the rankings. The match also saw the welcome return of Stephanie Scott-Flynn.
The final First round tie in the Handicap Cup was played and it was Nomads 2 that triumphed 6-2 over a St Andrews University side who gave a good account of themselves. Nomads 2 had a 2-1 lead after the level doubles and it wasn’t until the penultimate game that the match was decided with a 21-17, 21-15 win by Karen Westwater and Simon Krols (who was playing his 3rd match of the day).
In the mixed league Division 1 Nomads 2 had a convincing 8-0 win over Roseangle and are now looking favourites for the runners up spot behind their first team.
In the mixed league Division 2, Carnoustie are going great guns and made it 10 wins out of 10 with a 9-0 whitewash of Abertay University. Maria Boyd and Donnie Smith were amongst those with 3 wins and extended their leads at the top of the respective rankings.
Nomads 3 maintained their title challenge with a 6-1 win v Abertay University. Brian Corbett and Lucy Camlin were the top players with 3 wins each.
