Dundee Area Badminton Round Up: January
By Gordon Smith
Report for for w/e 22/1/24
It was the return of the T Duncan & Co Gents and ladies doubles leagues on Sunday with some cracking games.
In the ladies league, Nomads and Carnoustie had strong teams out and it was Nomads who moved 2 points clear at the top of the table with a narrow 3-2 win. It was level pegging throughout until the last round of games and it went down to the wire as Susie Roberts and Meghan Walker clinched victory with a 21-10, 21-17 win in the final game. Susie also maintained her lead at the top of the rankings.
David Lloyd ladies moved up to 2nd with a convincing 5-0 win v Dundee University. Louise Marshall and Helayna Ives were the star players for the hosts, with 3 wins each.
In the Gents league Division 1 Kirriemuir moved to within a point of the leaders with a convincing 6-0 win v David Lloyd.
Roseangle got their first victory with an excellent 4-2 win v Carnoustie. Wins in the opening 2 games paved the way to victory, but it still took until the final game for that to be sealed with a 21-7, 21-15 win by John Dunn and Adnan Haider. John was in top form for Rossie with 3 wins.
In Gents Division 2, even at the half way stage it’s pretty much looking like a title win for Forfar and they maintained their 100% record in convincing style with a 5-0 win v Nomads 2. Jamie King and Tom Metcalfe were the top players with 3 wins each and both share the lead at the top of the rankings with neither having lost a rubber all season yet.
In Division 3, the Firies moved level on points with Forfar 2 at the top of the table with a 5-0 win v David Lloyd, maintaining their 100% record. Steve Whitton and Brian Corbett were on fire for the Firies with 3 wins each.
In the T Duncan & Co Mixed League Division 1, Nomads are looking on course for the title with 5 wins out of 5, although bizarrely champions Dundee University have still to play a match in defence of their title. The league leaders latest win was a 9-0 win against their own 2nd team, although the scoreline was slightly harsh on Nomads 2, with some close games. Lauren Corbett and Bill Hogg were amongst those with 3 wins and they currently lead the rankings.
Old rivals Roseangle and NCR had a real tussle which ended up with the spoils being shared in a 4-4 draw. The Cash had a 2-1 lead after the level doubles. A win in the opening mixed put them in a great position and they were 4-2 up with 2 games to go but Rossie fought back and earned a draw. It was a Dunndouble as NCR’s Jaclyn Dunn and Roseangle’s John Dunn were the top players with 3 wins each.
In Division 2 Monifieth Grove got back to winning ways with a University double. First up was a convincing 7-0 win v Abertay University. The ladies led the way in this one with Ellen Watson, Kerry Smith and Louise Masey all gaining 3 wins.
A couple of days later, Monifieth Grove travelled to St Andrews University and this was a much closer affair. It was level pegging after the first round of games, with Monifieth Grove taking a 2-1 lead into the final round of games and securing a narrow 4-3 victory with a 21-19, 21-11 win by Brian Flynn and Ellen Watson proving decisive. Ellen Watson once again starred for the victors and her 3 wins took her to equal top in the rankings.
