Glasgow Under 15/19 Championships

Over the weekend there were some fantastic matches at the Glasgow Junior Championships with 49 of the 213 matches played going to three sets!

In the U19 events the finals were contested by only eight players.

Joshua Apiliga defeated Adam Pringle in an exciting 3-set match in the final of the singles and they then paired up to take the doubles title against Michael McGuire and Danny Robson in two closely contested sets.

The girls’ singles was won by Rachel Sugden who defeated Rachel Cameron. They girls were on opposite sides again in the doubles event with Rachel Sugden again being victorious with Alice Campbell when they defeated Rachel Cameron and Rachel Andrew.

In the mixed doubles the regular partnership of Adam and Rachel Andrew proved too strong for all the other couples as they beat Joshua and Rachel Sugden in the final.

In the U15 events Brooke Stalker was the only double winner.

The singles was one of the closest matches with Brooke just having the edge in defeating Keryn Swan 17-21, 21-15, 23-21.

Brooke and Keryn were then partners in the girls’ doubles and defeated Mary Kong and Vibba Raman in the final.

In the boys singles final Shaun Aamir defended his Glasgow U15 title in another 3-set match by beating Angus Meldrum 21-12, 20-22, 21-10. Angus had already had three more 3-set matches to reach the final!

The final of the boys’ doubles was an even closer match with the first seeds Grant Lewis and Finlay Sheriff defeating the second seeds Logan Ireland and Angus Meldrum 19-21, 21-11 25-23.

Josh Taylor and Katie Stewart had a very well deserved victory in the mixed doubles. In their quarter final they defeated the first seeds, in their semi-final they defeated the 3/4 seeds and then in the final defeated the second seeds Anthony McGuire and Brooke 21-14, 21-19.

Glasgow & North Strathclyde would like to thank all the players, volunteers, court officials and spectators who supported the tournament over the weekend.
