Great Weekend at Glasgow U13/U17

A grand total of 14779 hard fought points were scored during the Glasgow U13 / U17 Championships at the weekend.

In the under 17 boys’ singles Callum Smith took on Michael McGuire in the final, with Callum winning 21-17 22-20.

Callum had defeated Kenneth Cheung in his semi-final and Michael beat Jamie Gunn in the other semi-final, with Jamie having earlier caused an upset by knocking out second seed Calum Flockhart.

Callum and Calum paired up together to take the boys doubles in one of the closest matches of the day – defeating Michael and his partner Kenneth Cheung 25-23 in the third set!

In the U17 girls’ singles final second seed Lindsay Ireland defeated joint 3/4 seed Jodie Black. Jodie had knocked out top seed Alice Campbell in the semi-final.

Jodie Harris and Erin Waddell had a comfortable win in the final of the girls’ doubles against Rachel McLean and Erin Sinclair 21-9, 21-17.

The mixed doubles saw Callum and Michael on opposite sides again, this time with Michael, partnered by Alice, coming out on top. Callum was partnered by Erin Waddell.

The under 13 age group produced 2 double winners – Matthew Waring and Katrina Chan both winning singles then pairing up to win mixed doubles.

Both Matthew and Katrina were also in the finals of the level doubles events.

Matthew, playing with Daniel Kemp (England), lost to Joseph O’Neil Ferrero and Callan Short in another very exciting final 20-22, 30-28, 21-19.

Katrina and Imogen Meldrum lost to Ishbel McCallister and Vibha Ramam in another close 3 set match 19-21, 21-18, 21-14.

Overall, an excellent weekend of badminton and a great display of sportsmanship from all the players.
