Grimleys into European quarter-final; Hall, MacPherson, O’Donnell and Torrance progress in Belgium

Christopher and Matthew Grimley are through to the quarter-finals of the men’s doubles at the 2018 European Junior Championships being held in Tallinn, Estonia.

The top seeds beat Danes Rasmus Espersen and Sebastian Gronbjerg, coming from behind to win 12-21 21-15 21-14 to set up a showdown against England’s William Jones and Ethan Van Leeuwen later tonight.

With both semi-finalists awarded medal, the Grimleys only need one more win to guarantee themselves at least a bronze but unfortunately they are the only Scots still in contention after Lauren Middleton and Sarah Sidebottom were knocked out of the women’s doubles by Spanish eighth seeds Elena Andreu and Ana Carbon in the last match of the afternoon.

At the Belgian International there was an upset in the men’s doubles quarter-finals when Adam Hall and Alex Dunn, the second seeds, went out at the hands of Denmark’s David Daugaard and Frederik Sogaard.

But Hall is still in contention in mixed doubles with Julie MacPherson – they play French fourth seeds Thorn Gicquel and Delphine Delrue in the semi-finals this evening.

Eleanor O’Donnell and Ciara Torrance are also still in contention in the women’s doubles after beating Vimala Heriau and Margot Lambert of France 18-21 28-26 21-15 in a 70-minute match.

Delrue, this time partnering Lea Palermo, once again stands in the way of a place in the final for the Scots.
