Hat-tricks for Waring, Martin and Senthilrajaram at U13/17 National Badminton Championships
Matthew Waring, Alfie Martin and Tushara Senthilrajaram all bagged a hat-trick of titles today at the U13/17 Scottish National Junior Badminton Championships at the Sir Craig Reedie Centre in Glasgow.
Waring was on fire in the final of the U17 boys’ singles, dominating Lewis Coghill to take the gold having reached the final without dropping a set.
He followed that up with gold in the boys’ doubles with Coghill this time on the same side of the net, beating second seeds Godfrey Antomarlin and Joe Esson 21-10 21-15 in the final.
And in the mixed Waring and Brooke Stalker upset the seedings, saving four set points in the opener against top seeds Coghill and Katrina Chan before turning things around to win 23-21 21-17 to round off Waring’s title treble.
Rising star Iona Muir defended her singles title although she was made to work hard for it. The top seed beat Chan 21-17 23-21 in the final and with another year left at this age group, the fifteen-year-old is an exciting prospect for the future.
But Chan recovered from her singles disappointment to retain the girls’ doubles with Ishbel McCallister, winning 21-14 21-13 against second seeds Brooke Stalker and Vibha Raman in the final.
In the under 13 age group top seed Martin, last year’s silver medalist, dominated the singles event, reaching the final without dropping a set before beating second seed Dylan Jia to take the top step of the podium.
In the doubles he was defending the title he won last August with Arnav Saraswat. Partnering Jia this time around, the pair beat Charlie Junnor and Anton Valanraj 21-10 21-7 in the final to claim gold.
And in the mixed, Martin and Senthilrajaram again made up for the relative disappointment of a silver medal last year, beating Jia and Jaagruti Mannem in the final.
Senthilrajaram had earlier come from a set down to beat Mannem 16-21 21-10 21-7 to win the singles before partnering Shreya Varheese to girls’ doubles gold, again at the expense of the Mannem and her partner Adeena Mohamed Kasim.
The U13/17 National Badminton Championships were held at the Sir Craig Reedie Badminton Centre on 2 & 3 April 2022.
