Iona Muir Wins International Singles Title at Zagreb U17 Open
A huge congratulations to Iona Muir who claimed the International Singles Title at the Zagreb U17 Open (22-25 September 2022). The Glasgow School of Sport S5 pupil travelled to Zagreb over the weekend and struck Gold in the Girls Singles competition.
Iona Muir (15), triumphed at the LI-NING U17 Zagreb Open. Seeded fourth thanks in large part to her success at the U17 Spanish Open earlier in the year, Muir started off her campaign with a 21-8, 21-8 victory against Slovenian Ema Korenin in the second round. She continued her good form with a comfortable 21-2, 21-2 win against Croatian Vanja Novak.
Her opponent in the quarter-finals, German Sophia Lehmann, provided a much sterner test but Muir came through 21-12, 21-13 with some fine attacking play. With semi-finals and finals both scheduled for Sunday, Muir faced her toughest test yet against the first seed Anja Blazina. The hard-hitting Slovenian is currently ranked fourth in the U17 European circuit and proved a difficult opponent, but Scotland’s sole representative at the tournament battled to a 21-19, 21-18 victory.
The stage was then set for Iona to face off against the second seed (and her doubles partner at the tournament), Zsofi Szabo from Hungary in the final. In a back-and-forth match punctuated by excellent attacking play and dogged defence, Iona made the decisive break at 19-19 all in the second set, winning the final two points and claiming an excellent victory to go alongside her Bronze medal success in the Girls Doubles event alongside partner Zsofi.
Well done Iona!
