Kirsty wins silver in Spain

Kirsty Gilmour couldn’t quite reign in Spain over the weekend but she did manage to return from Madrid with a silver medal.

After a negotiating a couple of difficult matches to reach the quarter-finals, Gilmour beat Line Christopherson of Denmark 21-16 21-10, then another Dane, Irina Amalie Andersen 21-18 21-14 to reach the final.

There she came up against one of Thailand’s hottest young prospects Phittayaporn Chaiwan, and the youngster took the title with a 21-12 21-15 win.

In the men’s doubles Alex Dunn and Adam Hall scored an excellent win over top seeds David Daugaard and Frederik Sogaard, beating the Danes 21-18 11-21 23-21 to reach the semi-finals.

But the match took its toll when Hall picked up an ankle injury during the final point which ultimately led to the Scots retiring in the semi-finals while trailing 21-17 17-14 to another Danish pair Joel Eipe and Rasmus Kjaer.

And Hall and Julie MacPherson went out of the mixed doubles at the quarter-final stage.

Although they put up a strong challenge to Irish fourth seeds Sam and Chloe Magee the Scots were beaten 21-18 26-24.
