Muir at the double in Glasgow

The champions of the last National Championships of 2022 were crowned today at the Sir Craig Reedie Centre in Glasgow.

In the U19 age group the impressive Iona Muir followed up the U15 treble she won last year with a double at U19 level this year – an outstanding achievement for someone who still has three years left in the U19 age group.

She started by upsetting the odds to beat top seed Sophie Ford 21-14 21-11 in the singles final before teaming up with Brooke Stalker to beat Katrina Chan and Ishbel McCallister 21-16 21-18 in the final of the doubles.

It was only defeat in the mixed which stopped her from putting the finishing touches to her most recent hat-trick when she and Matthew Waring lost out to Angus Meldrum and McCallister 22-20 21-13 in the final.

In the boys’ singles second seed Waring cruised to victory in the final, beating joint 3/4 seed Finlay Jack 21-17 21-8.

Earlier in the day Jack had toppled top seed and reigning champion Meldrum 21-16 11-21 21-16 in the semi-finals while Waring came through his own three setter semi-final, edging out the other joint 3/4 seed Finlay Sheriff 21-12 18-21 21-9.

Meldrum won his second title of the day when he and Anthony McGuire retained their boys’ doubles crown with a 21-18 21-16 win over second seeds Evan Kenny and Josh Taylor in the final.

In the U15 age group Lingyun Xiao, Qing Yang Xiao and Deepti Vijayakumar each won a brace of titles.

Xiao and Xiao won the mixed doubles, beating Tushar Senthilrajaram and Deepti Vijayakumar 21-10 16-21 21-15 in the final.

Qing Yang had earlier teamed up with Vijayakumar in the girls’ doubles, beating Abigail Barrie and Pranavi Singh 21-12 14-21 21-15 in the final while Lingyun won the singles when he came from behind to beat Lewis Smith 16-21 27-25 21-17.

Vijayakumar also beat Singh in the final of the singles 21-16 21-17 while Smith got his revenge in the boys’ doubles when he and Lucas Chin beat Xiao and Senthilrajaram 22-20 21-17.
