Rachel Sugden wins treble at Glasgow Yonex Under 19 Championships

Rachel was no 1 seed in all 3 events and comfortably won the singles beating Lindsey Ireland in the final and partnered by Alice Campbell in the girls’ doubles defeated Jodie Harris and Erin Waddell in the final. The mixed doubles final was the last match of the afternoon and proved to be one of the most exciting – Rachel and Joshua Apiliga were taken to 3 sets by Michael McGuire and Alice and finally won 20-22, 21-12, 21-16. Michael and Alice had beaten the 2nd seeds, Callum Smith and Erin earlier in the tournament in another very close match.

The 4 top seed reached the semi-finals of the boys’ singles then Joshua and Callum (no 1 and 2 seeds respectively) progressed to the final where Callum took the title with an excellent victory over Joshua 21-14, 21-19.

The final of the boys’ doubles was fought out between the 1st and 2nd seeds with Michael and Danny Robson (no 1s) defeating Joshua and Jamie Gunn.

The Under 15 events produced some very interesting results.

In the boys’ Under 15 singles, unseeded Josh Taylor defeated 3 / 4 seed Finlay Jack in quarter final, 2nd seed Anthony McGuire in semi-final and 1st seed Matthew Waring in the final, all close three set matches.

In the girls singles the top 4 seeds reached the semi finals but Iona Muir came out on top for an excellent win.

The boys’ doubles saw Finlay and Matthew (2nd seeds) overcoming the 1st seeds Evan Kenny and Josh in another very close game 23-21, 21-19.

Two unseeded pairs reached the final of the girls’ doubles, both having beaten seeds in their semi-finals. It was won by Sophie Barrie and Katie Stewart who beat Iona and Eva Tremble.

Again in the mixed doubles the top two pairs reached the final with 2nd seeds Callan Short and Eva being victorious.
