Referee Marcel Schormans Final Hurrah at the EMTCQ2022

Referee Marcel Schormans requested to have his final event as a referee in Scotland at the European Mixed Team Championships Qualifier 2022 which was held from 15-18 December at The National Badminton Academy, Scotstoun, Glasgow.

Marcel has been involved in officiating for 38 years and has been at events in Scotland a few times as umpire and referee.

Marcel is a friendly and approachable character with a great sense of humour. After working with Marcel at the EMTCQ it’s clear that he is truly passionate about badminton and takes the time to teach others. He is a true professional when it comes to tournament regulations and ensuring that each detail is conducted in accordance with the Laws of Badminton.

We we’re delighted Badminton Europe made it possible to have Marcel at the EMTCQ2022 and we wish him all the best in his retirement.

What’s it like to be a referee?

The referee is overall in charge of the tournament ensuring that the tournament is conducted in accordance with the Laws of Badminton, the rules and regulations of the BWF and any other regulations pertinent to the specific tournament.

The referee ensures that the players are given facilities (including practice facilities) and playing conditions of an appropriate standard and safety, approval of the programme of play and practice schedule, ensuring the transport setup will meet the needs of the events and the overall monitoring of matters related to the fair and proper conduct the tournament for the players.

The referee shall also ensure that there is an adequate panel of technical officials of requisite ability and appropriate international representation.
