SSBU Round Up: Primary Quaich

By Hugh Ainsley

Four primary school teams gathered at Wishaw Sports Centre on Saturday 24th February to compete for the Primary Quaich.

The teams were Wallyford Primary (East Lothian), St, Mary’s Primary (Hamilton), West End Primary (Elgin) and Braidbar Primary (East Renfrew).

The event was played as a pool with 10 rubbers in each match. In the first round West-End beat St. Mary’s 8-2, while Braidbar beat Wallyford 10-0. In the second round St. Mary’s beat Wallyford 7-3 while Braidbar got off to a flying start winning the first 3 games of their tie against West End.

West End however have won the event for the last 4 years and fought back taking the 2nd boys single and both girls singles to level the tie at 3 games all. This left the level doubles where West End took the first boys double and Braidbar the second.

West End took the first girls double leaving the last game to decide the tie. West End pair Sophie Algar and Bella Fraser were taking on Braidbar’s Eva MacBride & Alice Sheward. It was a tense and tight game with the West End pair eventually winning by 21 points to 16.

In the final round of matches Braidbar defeated St. Mary’s 10-0 while West End defeated Wallford with the same score. Despite the match scores there were many close games and all pupils enjoyed their day. The secondary pupils will gather at Scotstoun on Wednesday for their quaich.
