Smith into quarter final of European Juniors

Callum Smith has reached the quarter-finals of the boys’ singles at the U19 European Junior Championships in Lahti, Finland.

The Duns teenager upset the formbook, beating eighth seed Jacobo Fernandez 21-18 22-20 today to follow up yesterday’s opening 21-10 21-16 win over Ivan Kovacevic of Serbia.

Smith was also competing in the mixed doubles with Erin Waddell but the pair were overcome 21-12 21-14 by Sweden’s Gustav Bjorkler and Edith Urell.

Waddell went out of the girls’ doubles partnering Alice Campbell in a tough opening match against third seeds Katharina Fink and Yasmine Hamza while Campbell suffered an exit in the girls’ singles at the hands of Julie Franconville.

In the boys’ doubles Kenneth Cheung and Michael McGuire lost out to Robin Jantti and Niilo Nuqvist, leaving Smith as Scotland’s last man standing.

He will face fourth seeded German Matthias Kicklitz on Thursday knowing that a win would guarantee at least a bronze medal.
