SSBU 2005 & 2008 Age Groups: Round Up

It was back to Wishaw on 14 January for SSBU with two age groups held on the one day. 44 players in total took part with most of the entries in the younger age group.

2005 Age Group Event

For the 2005 boys singles there was a pool of 5 players. There were some great matches with Josh Taylor (Allander) eventually coming out as the winner. The boys doubles was just a final as only 2 pairs had entered. Josh paired up with Evan Kenny and the pair won a tight final against Edinburgh pair Howard Cheuk & Theo Johnston – the score was 21-19, 21-18.

There were 6 girls in the singles, so after 2 pools of 3 and semi-finals for the A event, the final was between 2 Edinburgh girls Qing Yang Xiao and Tushara Senthilrajaram with Qing winning in 2 long games 25-23, 27-25.

For the doubles, the age groups were combined but Inverness pair Abigail and Sophie Barrie proved to be worthy champions with victories over some strong younger players.

2008 Age Group Event

For the 2008 event there were 20 players in the boys singles. The number 2 seed had pulled out through injury a couple of days before the event but the remaining seeds all reached their appointed place in the semis.

The final was a tight affair with number 5 seed Lucas Chin (Allander) taking a three set victory over first seeded Callum McWhirter from Highland the score line being 21-12,13-21,21-15. Callum then paired up with Lucas to win the boys doubles.

In the girls singles, the seeded players again reached the final with Jaagruti Mannem taking a 21-17, 21-15 victory over Chloe Mackenzie who had travelled down from Caithness. Jaagruti paired up with Thenoo Annamalai to take the doubles title with Chloe Mackenzie taking the runners up spot with Grace Macintosh from Inverness.

All players enjoyed the event although the finishing time was just after 5PM due to the loss of one court because of a leaky roof! The organisers are hoping for dry weather for the 2011 event next weekend.
