SSBU 2008 Age Group Tournament: Round up

The SSBU were back on familiar ground on 22 October with the 2008 age group event, held at Wishaw Sports Centre.

21 players took part in the competition, with 14 players in the boy’s singles split into 4 pools with the top 2 in each pool going through to the A knock out and the remaining players going through to the B knock out.

The pools were played as one game to 21 but both knock outs were played as best of 3. It wasn’t a good day for the seeded players with the top 2 seeds being beaten in the quarter finals and one of the remaining seeds losing in the semi.

In the end, the event was won by unseeded Ben Ross from Edinburgh with victories in 3 sets over Lucas Chin in the semi and Alfie Sweeney in the final. Ben wasn’t so lucky in the doubles losing 2 of his 3 pool games but with partner Peter Fish went on to win the consolation event.

In the main event, the seeded pairs got to the final this time with the number 2 seeds Ciaran Hope & Alfie Sweeney coming out on top with another 3-set victory over Callum McWhirter & Finlay Murdoch. Ciaran had the longest match of the day with a 23-25, 28-26, 21-16 victory over number one seed Max McCabe in the singles.

There were 5 girls in the singles so a pool of 5 was played. The top 2 seeds won all their matches until they met each other in the last round with Ingrid Wang claiming another 3-set victory over Anshita Jaiswal the score line being 19-21, 26-24, 21-12.

Unfortunately, there was only one girls doubles pair so Grace Macintosh & Mia Saiful bravely took on the boys and achieved one victory in their pool, very much enjoying the challenge.

SSBU now look forward to two events next weekend with the 2011 age group on 29 October and the senior Inter Area on the 30.
