SSBU 2010 Tournament: Round Up

The first SSBU event of the year was held at Wishaw on 7th January. There were 21 players and the event went very well.

The event was for players born 2010 or later and the boys singles went pretty much according to seeding with Charlie Junnor and Reyansh Arora reaching the final as they had done in the same age group in December.

Reyansh fought hard but the result was once again a victory for Charlie 21-15, 21-15.

With 9 players in the girls singles there was a pool of 5 in the preliminary round and so unusually the girls final was held after the boys one. Arisha Manir (East Kilbride) is playing very well at present and managed a victory over number 2 seed Riya Bhaskar (Cupar) in the semi-final.

In the final however, she came up against Shreya Vergheese (Renfrew) and with a three and a half year difference in ages the older girl proved just too strong for Arisha  winning the final 21-11, 21-7.

At the start of the event only 2 pairs had entered the boys doubles but Will Hinter (Edinburgh) persuaded Nathan Wong (Scotstoun) to pair with him to allow a pool of 3.

The scratch pairing managed a victory over Aberdeen pair Aayush Nagdeve & Aarav Sinha but had to settle for the runners up prize when they lost 21-9, 21-4 to Aryan Aniruddhan (Edinburgh) & Drew Murdoch (Moray).

The final event was the girls doubles where there were 4 pairs. The 2 Lanarkshire girls paired up for this and were seeded 2nd. However first seeded Amy Hunter & Sophie Walker from Edinburgh lost a three setter to Riya Bhaskar & Annika Sinha meaning that the deciding match at the end of the afternoon was between Riya and Annika and Elona & Arisha.

Arisha kept up her good form and the Lanarkshire pair won the event with a 21-12, 21-14 victory.

Next weekend will be busier with the 2005 and 2008 events both being held on the same day.
