SSBU Round Up: Gibb Memorial Secondary Quaichs
On Wednesday 1 March it was the turn of the secondary schools to take part in the Gibb Memorial Quaich.
There were 2 groups. 4 teams played in the under 14 event and 5 in the senior.
For both events there were 10 rubbers per match each rubber being one game to 21 points. There were many close games, especially in the senior event where in the first boys single’s the score was 30-29 between Blair Tait (George Watson’s) and Matthew Brown (Williamwood) – with Blair winning the match.
The junior teams involved were George Watson’s, Williamwood High, Lanark Grammar and the High School of Glasgow. Williamwood and Watson’s both had many strong players in their team and both teams scored 9-1 victories against Lanark and 7-3 victories over the High School, so it was almost inevitable that the result in their match against each other was a 5 all draw. A countback on points was required with Williamwood taking the victory by just 6 points.
In the senior event Williamwood, Watson’s and the High School of Glasgow were joined by Berwickshire High and Holy Cross High.
Holy Cross started off with a 5 all draw against George Watson’s and another 5 all draw against the High School of Glasgow. However a 6-4 loss to Williamwood left Holy Cross in 4th place in the event. With High School of Glasgow beating Williamwood by 6 games to 4 George Watson’s the deciding match was between High School of Glasgow and George Watson’s. On this occasion the capital city team got the upper hand with a 7-3 victory leaving the Glasgow side to pick up the silver medals.
All pupils involved in the event enjoyed the competition and play finished at 2.30 leaving the teams able to set off home at 3. We hope to see more teams entering in 2024!
