Superb win for the Grimleys at World Junior Championships
Christopher and Matthew Grimley scored a superb victory to reach the last-sixteen of the boys’ doubles event at the World Junior Championships in Canada.
Standing in their way were Hiroki Midorikawa and Hiroki Nakayama, the top ranked Japanese pair who, although unseeded, were always likely to provide a huge challenge to the Scottish fourth seeds.
But undaunted, the twins ran out as winners, recovering from losing the first game to win 19-21 21-12 21-19 to set up a clash against Thailand’s No. 11 seeds for a place in the quarter-finals.
Speaking afterwards, Christopher was understandably delighted with the performance.
“Really pleased to win that” he said. “We were expecting a very hard match and hadn’t looked any further. This win will give us confidence for the rest of the tournament.”
Head Coach Robert Blair continued: “The boys had a great win against the top Japanese pair.
“They played a really fantastic game. Holding their nerve and playing a few great rallies right at the end of the third.”
The Grimleys are the last Scots standing in Canada. Adam Pringle and Rachel Andrew produced a very creditable display in their mixed doubles tie against French pair William Villeger and Sharone Bauer but the 11th seeds were ultimately too strong, winning 21-18 21-13.
And in the girls’ doubles Lauren Middleton and Sarah Sidebottom also faced challenging opposition in China’s Chen Yingxue and Li Yijing, who won 21-11 21-13.
Christopher and Matthew play their next match today at 16.20hrs local time (21.20hrs GMT)
