Tournament round up: Serbian U17 International NOVI SAD 2022

A team of U17 players travelled to Serbia to compete in the NOVI SAD U17 International where Katrina Chan and Ishbel McCallister managed to secure a bronze medal in the girls doubles.

On their route to the semi-finals, they also beat the number one seeds from Romania, Laura Constantin and Denisa-Maria Muscalu in a close three set encounter, before eventually coming up short against the Hungarian pairing, Petra Hart and Eszter Nagy – who went on to win the tournament.

In the mixed doubles, Katrina Chan and Lewis Coghill also performed well, reaching the quarter finals by beating the fifth seed Croatian pairing of Roko Pipunic and Ana Pranic before eventually losing out to the top seeded Slovakian pair, Matus Polacek and Johanka Ivanovicova.

After the tournament, our players travelled to Hungary for a one-week training camp in Pécs, where they were able to work alongside some of the best juniors in Hungary and experience the setup.

Speaking to Josh Neil, National Junior Performance Network Manager, he said:

“I am confident that all players on the trip had a great time and learned a significant amount. Firstly, we competed well in many ways at the tournament, however we are aware that there are many areas we can now go back and improve on.

I also believe the training camp was hugely beneficial. We had very high expectations in the camp to be able to deliver every single day, and I believe each player pushed themselves. I now want to see these players take home these standards and expectations and use this to benefit others in the pathway.

We will continue to look for more collaborative opportunities like this as I believe this will help our players understand the international standards of our sport.”
