U17 Midland Junior Championships Report: Treble for Katrina Chan and Doubles for Matthew Waring and Lewis Coghill
With additional Covid safety measures in place to comply with current restrictions on indoor events, 40 players from all across the country competed at NICC Perth in the 2022 u17 Midland Junior Championships.
No1 seeds Katrina Chan/Ishbel McCallister took the honours in the first final of the weekend, defeating 2nd seeded Orkney pairing Gemma Foulis/Shannon Leslie in the GD event. The successful girls then faced each other in the GS final, where Katrina edged Ishbel 21-19 in the 3rd set of a high quality and very exciting match.
The Mixed Doubles saw both Katrina and Ishbel reach their 3rd final of the day, partnered with Lewis Coghill and Callan Short respectively. After 2 closely fought sets Katrina/Lewis emerged as winners, giving Katrina a hard earned treble success.
The u17 BS was dominated by Matthew Waring, who eased through the rounds before defeating Lewis Coghill in the final. Matthew/Lewis then teamed up in the BD event to both claim their 2nd title of the day, although Godfrey Antomarlin/Joe Esson pushed them all the way in a very tight two set final.
Midland Group tournament organisers wish to thank NICC Staff for their assistance in hosting this event considering the additional Covid restrictions currently in place. Also to BSCO umpires for officiating the SF and Finals on Sunday. And finally a thank you to all players & parents for their willing cooperation with all Covid safety protocols.
