Yonex MCFM East of Scotland U13 & U17 Junior Championships 2023

By Colin Campbell

Two weeks on from the Yonex MCFM East of Scotland Under 15 and Under 19 Junior Championships, it was the turn of the Under 13 and Under 17 age groups to demonstrate their skills.

As with the previous tournament, play took place at the Jack Kane Centre on Saturday and Meadowbank Sports Centre on Sunday where the semi finals and finals took place.

It was very heartening to see such a large increase in the entries in the under 13 age group to complement the large entry in the under 17 events. This is really encouraging for the future of the sport.

We were delighted that Martin Campbell was there once again to watch the finals and then present the prizes. We really appreciate the support that we receive from Martin Campbell Financial Management and Yonex, supported by Gannon Sports, as the survival of these events is so dependent on the support from our sponsors. As always, there were many entertaining and competitive matches throughout the weekend with some excellent semi finals and finals on the Sunday.

Titles were shared widely in both age groups with only Ewan Stewart in the under 17s and Akshara Chavan in the under 13 age group winning two titles.

We greatly appreciate the support from the members of the Lothian Badminton Group committee who assisted throughout the weekend as well as the staff at the Jack Kane and Meadowbank Sports Centres who once again were so helpful at the respective venues. We are also really grateful for the help from the Badminton Scotland Court Officials group who provided umpires for the finals.
