Entering tournaments

Please note, players should not enter more than one tournament held on the same day, unless they have sought (and received) permission from the organisers of both tournaments. This applies to Scottish players playing in tournaments held outside Scotland as well as in domestic Scottish tournaments.

Additionally, players should advise Morag McCulloch if playing in a tournament outside Scotland and have not been entered by Badminton Scotland. A link should also be sent to Morag of these results (email mccmorag@gmail.com).

Rankings

All players in Scotland need to be an individual member of Badminton Scotland in order to play in ranking tournaments. If you are not already a member you can find information about how to join here.

The ranking lists give the total number of points awarded to each player, then selects the best 6 to count towards the ranking list for each discipline. There is also an age filter built in.

For seeding in level doubles and mixed events, the 6 tournament total for each player shall be added together. Rankings for tournaments shall be taken from the ranking lists 3 weeks previous to the week number of the event.

Only Nationals, Grade A and Grade B tournaments require to be seeded until July 2024. From August 2024 onwards, Grade C tournaments also need to be seeded.

For information about ranking points allocated to each event click here.

For U11 and U12 age group tournaments, in the event that a particular event (for example girls’ singles) receives less than 4 entries, tournament organisers are advised to consider combining boys’ and girls’ in a mixed gender event. Mixed gender events at U11 and U12 age groups will receive the same ranking points as single gender events.

There are specific people appointed to oversee the seedings for events, with details shown below. Seeds are based on player rankings taken 3 weeks before the start of a tournament. Please note that although seedings are based on ranking lists, the people listed below are granted the flexibility to apply their judgement in cases where obvious anomalies occur.

Tournament organisers should contact the below named individuals for seeding Grade A and Grade B tournaments. For Grade C tournaments, tournament organisers themselves should create the seeds for their event and the seeds should be based on the Scottish national rankings, although tournament organisers are granted the flexibility to apply their judgement in cases where there is a clear anomaly. Tournament organisers can contact Badminton Scotland’s Head of Events Peter Dean for advice if required

The number of seeds for each event should be based on the number of entries, as per the guidelines below:

3-11 entries = 2 seeds
12-23 entries = 4 seeds
24-47 entries = 8 seeds
48-64 entries = 16 seeds
