BWF World Championships: Scottish Successes Underway in New Delhi

17th August 2026 by Robert McLean

Play is already underway at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in New Delhi as the world’s best badminton players battle it out at the BWF World Championships, and there have already been some notable Scottish successes.

Matthew and Christopher Grimley made a hard-fought start to their campaign in the men’s doubles, battling through three tough games to overcome Canadian pairing Lee and Lindeman, ranked 41st in the world.

There was further Scottish success in the men’s doubles this morning, as Alex Dunn and Adam Pringle produced an impressive performance to defeat Thailand’s world number 48 pairing Charoenkitamorn and Thongsa-Nga in straight games.

It was a contrasting result in the women’s singles for Kirsty Gilmour. The Scottish star pushed world number five Han of China all the way in a fiercely contested encounter, but ultimately fell short in the deciding game, losing 21-13.

Attention now turns to the women’s doubles, where Julie MacPherson and Ciara Torrance begin their campaign this morning. They face a potentially tight opening-round contest against young Indonesian pairing Nastine and Meida, who are ranked 32nd in the world.

There is also more action to come for Dunn and MacPherson, who are scheduled to begin their mixed doubles campaign tomorrow in the round of 64.

The Scottish team will be ably supported throughout the championships by national coach Robert Blair as they take on the very best players on the world stage.
