Clash of Clans Arctic Open: Brilliant Opening Day for Scotland in Vantaa
6th October 2026 by Robert McLean
It was a brilliant opening day for the Scots in Vantaa, with two impressive wins and two confident performances setting the tone for what promises to be an exciting week at the Clash of Clans Arctic Open.
First up for the Scottish contingent were Alex Dunn and Julie MacPherson, who faced a rising Danish pairing in Mette Werge and Kristoffer Kolding, who have rapidly climbed to 53 in the world rankings.
The opening game was a high-quality affair, with little separating the two pairs. Dunn and MacPherson showed great composure when it mattered most, holding their nerve to take the first game 23-21.
The Scots then stepped up another level in the second. Alex and Julie controlled the rallies and never allowed their Danish opponents to get close enough to threaten a deciding game, eventually closing out the match 21-15 to secure a straight-games victory.
Their reward is a place in the last 16, where they will face the winners of the meeting between China’s third seeds Wei and Jiang and Taipei’s Sung and Tsai.
Rounding off the Scottish interest on day one was Kirsty Gilmour, who faced a familiar opponent in India’s Malvika Bansod.
Bansod had won their previous two meetings on tour, but Gilmour produced an assured performance to turn the tables in Vantaa. Kirsty made a strong start and never allowed her opponent to build any sustained momentum, taking the opening game 21-18.
The second game was even more convincing. Gilmour continued to dictate the pace and pulled clear to complete a 21-18, 21-13 victory and book her place in the last 16.
Standing between Kirsty and a place in the quarter-finals will be China’s third seed Han, setting up another tough test for the Scot.
Big Day Ahead
Day two brings another busy schedule, with the men’s and women’s doubles taking top billing for the Scottish contingent.
Matt and Chris Grimley will take on Finnish qualifiers Paul and Honkanen. With the brothers showing strong recent form, they will be hoping to build on that momentum and make a deep run in Vantaa.
In the women’s doubles, Julie and Ciara face a difficult opening assignment against China’s fifth seeds Bao and Cao. It promises to be a stern test for the Scottish pairing, but a strong start could set them up for a memorable tournament.
Rounding off the Scottish action will be a Scotland-versus-England clash, as Alex Dunn and Adam Pringle take on rising English pair Zach Russ and Alex Green.
After such a positive opening day, expectations will be high as the Scots look to continue their impressive run through the Arctic Open.
