Davies progresses to knockout stages as Scotland enjoy strong finish in Tokyo

It was another busy day for Scotland’s Andrew Davies and Owen Carmichael at the Japan Para Badminton International in Tokyo, with both players finishing their group-stage campaigns strongly and Davies progressing to the knockout stages of the singles.

Carmichael rounded off his men’s singles campaign with a narrow defeat against Canada’s world number 20 Anthony Hay. Despite the result, Owen can be hugely proud of his performances throughout the tournament, competing against elite-level opposition and gaining valuable experience on the international stage.

There was a positive finish for the Scottish pairing later in the day as Davies and Carmichael combined for their final men’s doubles group match against Brazil’s De Oliveira Costa and Canada’s Xue.

The Scots produced a strong display to claim a straight-games victory, winning 21-13, 21-19. Unfortunately, the result was not enough to see them progress from the group stages, but the pair can take plenty of positives from their performances throughout the week.

There was fantastic news for Davies in the men’s singles, however, as results elsewhere went his way to secure his place in the knockout stages.

Andrew’s reward is a round of 16 meeting with Peru’s Nilton Quispe. The two have previously faced each other in doubles, but tomorrow’s encounter will be their first meeting in singles.

After a strong group-stage campaign, Davies will now look to continue his run in Tokyo and book his place in the quarter-finals.
