Disappointment for Scots in Uppsala
19th January 2026 by Robert McLean
It was a challenging week for the Scottish players at the Victor Swedish Open in Uppsala, with all representatives exiting at the first qualifying stage.
James Robertson was unable to build on his impressive performance at the Estonia International the previous week, bowing out in straight sets to talented young Austrian Emil Dantler. Despite flashes of quality, Robertson was defeated 21–12, 21–11.
Matthew Waring also faced a tough opening-round encounter, putting up a determined fight against promising Czech youngster Dominik Kopřiva. Waring was eventually beaten in straight sets, 21–12, 21–15.
Unfortunately, Callum Smith was forced to withdraw from his match against home favourite Richard Kuhl due to illness. We wish Callum a speedy recovery ahead of his trip to Reykjavik, where he is scheduled to compete at the RSL Iceland International this week.
In the doubles, Yan Lok Chiu and his Australian partner Yan Ki Chiu were unable to progress after a loss to the up-and-coming American pairing of Stanley Xing and Arden Quan Lee, going down 21–12, 21–18.
While results did not go their way in Sweden, the squad will look to regroup quickly as attention now turns to a busy European swing of tournaments in March.
