Double Medal Success for Davies as Welsh and Mazzoni Make Impressive Debuts in Istanbul

Scotland’s para badminton athletes made their mark at the Victor European Para Badminton Championships in Istanbul, Türkiye, with a mix of medal success, promising debuts, and inspiring performances that highlighted the growing strength of the national programme.

The standout performer of the week was undoubtedly Andrew Davies, who delivered a superb campaign in the SH6 classification, coming home with not one but two bronze medals. Partnering with Daria Bujnicka (Poland) in the mixed doubles, Davies showed great composure and tactical awareness throughout the group stages and knockout rounds, as the pair battled their way to a well-earned place on the podium.

Davies wasn’t finished there — he also formed a formidable partnership in the men’s doubles SH6 alongside Gonçalo Batista (Portugal). The duo combined effectively, demonstrating strong court chemistry and resilience against Europe’s top para badminton pairs to clinch a second bronze medal for Scotland. These medals mark a major achievement for Davies and reinforce his growing reputation on the European stage.

Meanwhile, rising stars Logan Welsh and Sofia Mazzoni made their international debuts at this elite-level competition, stepping onto the court with courage and determination in the SL3 and SL4 categories respectively. Although both players were unable to progress beyond the group stages, they gained invaluable experience competing against seasoned international opponents — an essential stepping stone in their development.

For Logan and Sofia, the week in Istanbul was about more than results — it was an opportunity to absorb the intensity, pace, and professionalism of top-tier international play. Their performance, attitude, and commitment were commendable and suggest a bright future ahead as they aim to become regular fixtures in the Scotland squad at future European and World competitions.

Off the court, the team was supported every step of the way by National Para Coach Kirsty Flockhart, whose guidance and dedication played a pivotal role in preparing the athletes for the challenges of the tournament. From match-day tactics to emotional support, her presence was instrumental in ensuring the squad performed to the best of their abilities.

This championship not only brought medals home, but also showcased the depth of talent emerging from Scotland’s para badminton pathway. With experienced players like Davies leading the way and young talents like Welsh and Mazzoni beginning their international journeys, the future of Scottish para badminton is bright.

A huge congratulations to all three players and to everyone involved in supporting their success. You’ve done Scotland, and the para badminton community, immensely proud.
