Dundee Area Badminton Round-up

There was a big clash in the T Duncan & Co Gents doubles Division 1 as the top two, Nomads and NCR clashed and it was reigning champions Nomads who were victorious with a 3-0 victory in an exciting tussle. Nomads started strongly winning the opening two games but it was very tight thereafter with victory being clinched with a 21-10, 21-18 win by Roger Ang and Johnny Reeve in the final game to make it 9 wins from 9 for Nomads. The victory virtually guarantees that Nomads will retain their title as they only have to fulfil their final match of the season to clinch it. There was some consolation for the Cash as Josh Lowe was confirmed top of the rankings and is the Gents doubles First Division Player of the Year.

The other Division 1 clash was a tight affair as Kirriemuir edged out Roseangle 2-1. This was close throughout with Kirrie taking a 2-1 lead into the final round of games and a couple of draws in these secured victory and virtually guarantees 3rd place, whilst Roseangle look comfortable and virtually free from any relegation worries in 4th.

Kirrie 2 were also involved in a close affair as they clinched 2nd place in Division 2 with a 2-1 win over 3rd placed Monifieth Grove. A 21-9, 21-12 win by Ian Anderson and Derek Thompson in Game 5 sealed the victory.

In the other Division 2 match, Lunchtime Badminton had a surprisingly comfortable 6-0 win v Nomads 2 to ease their relegation worries, but it’s very tight with only 2 points separating the bottom 3.

In Divison 3 newly crowned champions The Firies were piped into the hall to celebrate their title win and put their 100% record on the line v David Lloyd 2. This was another close affair which went down to the final game, but Gary Strachan and Matt Christie ensured that perfect record remained intact with a 21-9, 21-12 win, with Matt being the star player for the Fries with 3 wins and what a season it’s been for the Firies!

In the ladies league, Nomads moved to the top of the table with a 4-1 win v Dundee University. Karen Westwater starred in this one with 3 wins, with teammate Susie Roberts moving up to 2nd place in the rankings. Nomads are 2 points clear at the top of the table, but have a couple of tough remaining fixtures against their nearest challengers, so it’s all still to play for.

In the mixed league Division 2, it was 2nd v 3rd as Nomads 3 hosted Monifieth Grove. The visitors were on top early on and took a 2-1 lead into the mixed after 2 wins in the ladies doubles and it remained that way until game 7 when Nomads levelled. A draw followed to take it to a last game decider and it couldn’t have been much closer as John Lowrence and Susan Cummings secured a 3-2 victory for Nomads with a 21-18, 21-18 win.
