Dundee Badminton League: Tight Clashes, Standout Performances and Varsity Derbies Define the Week

The Gents doubles league dominated the Dundee Area Badminton fixture list this week, with some important and exciting matches.

In Division 2, David Lloyd moved 3 points clear at the top, but were made to work hard for a narrow 3-2 win over bottom club The Firies.   David Lloyd had a 1-0 advantage after the first round of games but didn’t seal victory until the final game when a 21-15, 21-18 win by Hugh Tyson and Aidan Brogan clinched what could be a vital win.

There was a top of the table clash in Division 3, as 2nd placed Nomads 2 narrowed the gap on leaders Dundee University, inflicting the students first defeat, with a 3-0 win.  A 21-11, 21-13 win in the penultimate game by Johnny Reeve and Will Tong ensured victory.

The other match in Division 3 was even tighter as Lunchtime Badminton edged out Monifieth Grove 3-2.  Victory wasn’t decided until the final game with a 21-8, 21-14 win by Iain Martin and Sean Kingsley clinching it. Iain was the star player on the day with his 3 wins taking him up to 2nd place in the rankings, a point behind the leader.

There was better news in Division 4 for Monifieth Grove 2, who had an excellent 3-1 win over league leaders Arbroath.  A 21-8, 21-13 win by Magnes Alphay and Callum Soldan in the final game ensured the win and a likely exciting culmination to the title race. Magnes was in top form for the victors with 3 wins.

In Division 1, NCR moved off the bottom of the table with a convincing 5-0 win over a Kirriemuir side who now occupy the bottom spot.  Lewis Hann and Josh Lowe were in cracking form for the Cash with 3 wins each.

There was one fixture in the mixed league Division 2, with Abertay University getting their first victory of the season with a 6-2 varsity derby win over St Andrews.  Jennifer Nicol and Cara Malcolm-Hutcheon were the star students with 3 wins each.
