Dundee Badminton Round Up

There were another couple of titles decided in the Gents league in an exciting day of Badminton at David Lloyd on Sunday, as well as confirmation of Nomads retaining their mixed First Division title.  Congratulations to all the winners.

In Division 3, Nomads 2 needed at least a draw v Lunchtime Badminton to overtake Dundee University at the top of the table and lift the title and they did it in style with a 5-0 win.  Bob Iannetta and Christian Hansen were the star Nomads players with 3 wins in an all round great team performance, as they pipped the students to the title by a single point.  Dundee University did have the consolation of having the top ranked player as Ko Ujita claimed the Divisional Player of the Year.

In Division 4, there was a title shoot our with Monifeth Grove 2 taking on Forfar 3.  Monifieth Grove needed a win or a draw to lift the title whilst only a win would do for Forfar 3.  It promised to be close and so it turned out.  It was all square at 1-1 after the first round of games, but Forfar 3 edged 2-1 ahead in the 2nd round with a 21-11, 21-7 win by Andrew Steele and Olivier Walley.  It was still all to play for as they moved into the final games and with both games being drawn in an exciting finish it was Forfar 3 in their first season that claimed the title, both teams finishing on the same points with identical records, but Forfar 3 edging it on sets difference.  Monifieth Grove did have the consolation of Magnus Alphey in his first season confirming his Divisional Player of the Year award with his win and two draws.

It was a busy day for Roseangle in Division 1 as they played a double header.  First up was a clash with old rivals NCR and it was the Cash that came out on top with a 5-1 victory.  It started well for Rossie with a win in the opening game but that was as good as it got as NCR took control.  Robert Adamson and Ross Gilmartin were on top form with 3 wins each.

Roseangle were then involved in a closer affair with Kirriemuir who they edged out 4-2.  Roseangle won the opening 2 games and maintained that winning margin going into the final round where a 21-14, 21-16 win by David Morrison and Callan Mckenna sealed the win.   David was the star player with 3 wins.  The defeat consigned Kirriemuir to bottom spot and relegation to Division 2.

It’s been a tough season for the Firies in Divison 2 following their promotion last season, but it all came good for them in their final match as they defeated NCR 2 4-1.  It was close early on with a win apiece in the first round of games, then the Firies edging 2-1 ahead, before making certain of the victory with 2 wins in the final games.  Bob Paton and Kevin Stewart starred with 3 wins each.

In the mixed league, Nomads confirmed retention of their title and a 100% record with a 4-1 win over Roseangle.  Nomads were 2-0 up after the level doubles with wins in both Gents, but the opening mixed games were very tight with honours even, before victory and the title win was secured with a 21-14, 21-10 win by Bill Hogg and Susie Roberts in the penultimate match.  Bob Paton was the star player on the night with 3 wins, however it was his team-mates that took the honours in the Divisional rankings with Bill Hogg retaining the Gents title and Susie Roberts and Gaya Gunatilake sharing the honours in the ladies
