European Junior Championships – Individual Event Tournament Review

Scottish interest came to an end this afternoon in Tatabánya, bringing to a close an exciting and highly rewarding week for our young players across both the team and individual events.
The individual event provided plenty of opportunities for the Scottish juniors to test themselves against some of Europe’s best young talent, with a number of excellent performances and hard-fought matches throughout the tournament.
Jaagruti battled strongly against her Swiss opponent Sharma, who was two years her senior. Despite a determined effort, she narrowly missed out in both sets, going down 21-16, 21-16.
Arnav faced a difficult challenge against Estonia’s Joost, with the Estonian demonstrating why he is the tournament’s fifth seed in the men’s singles. Arnav fought hard but ultimately lost 21-9, 21-14.
The final matches of the Scottish campaign were both classics and could have gone either way.
In the mixed doubles, Jaagruti and Pranavi made an excellent start against Sweden’s Liang and Sun, taking the opening set 21-16. The Swedes responded strongly, however, taking the second set 21-18 before completing the comeback with a 21-11 deciding set.
Alfie and Lewis produced another impressive performance in the men’s doubles against Switzerland’s Briancourt and Crelier. The Scots took the opening set 21-18, but the match then became an agonisingly close battle. The Swiss pair edged the second set 21-19 before eventually prevailing 22-20 in the deciding set.
While the final results may not have gone Scotland’s way, the performances, competitiveness and experience gained throughout the week will be invaluable for our young players as they continue their development.

Congratulations to all of our Scottish youngsters on an excellent week in Tatabánya. They can return home proud of their performances and the experience gained competing on the European stage.
