FZ FORZA Future Series Nouvelle-Aquitaine Review
6th July 2026 by Robert McLean
It was a productive yet challenging week for Scotland’s two representatives, Matthew Waring and James Robertson, at the FZ FORZA Future Series Nouvelle-Aquitaine in Pessac, France, where both competed against a highly competitive international field.
Matthew Waring continued his impressive transition to the senior circuit with another strong qualifying campaign, successfully navigating two difficult matches to earn his place in the main draw. He was rewarded with a first-round meeting against home favourite Yohan Barbieri. Despite a determined performance, the more experienced Frenchman claimed victory 21–18, 21–14. It was another encouraging display from Waring, whose performances continue to demonstrate his ability to compete at senior international level.
James Robertson began his tournament directly in the main draw but faced arguably the toughest possible opening match against Denmark’s top seed, Victor Kauffmann. Robertson produced a spirited performance and battled throughout the contest, but Kauffmann’s quality ultimately shone through as he secured a 21–15, 21–13 victory. The result was further put into perspective as the Dane went on to lift the title, defeating second seed Haase of the Netherlands in a thrilling three-set final.
Although neither Scot progressed beyond the opening round of the main draw, there were plenty of positives to take from the week. Waring continued his excellent form in qualification and gained further valuable experience at senior level, while Robertson tested himself against the eventual champion in one of the strongest draws of the tournament.
Both players will now enjoy a short break from international competition before returning to action later in the year at tournaments in Scotland, Ireland and Wales.
