HYLO Open – Day 3 Review
29th October 2026 by Robert McLean
It was another successful day for Scotland in Saarbrücken as Kirsty Gilmour produced an outstanding performance to book her place in the quarter-finals of the HYLO Open.
Gilmour was in imperious form against Taipei’s Shuo Yun Sung, dominating the opening game to claim it 21–2. It was a remarkable scoreline at this level of international badminton, underlining the Scot’s quality, focus and ability to put her opponent under immediate pressure. Sung responded with a much-improved performance in the second game, but Gilmour remained composed and in control, seeing out the match 21–11 to secure her progression to the last eight in straight games.
The victory sets up a highly anticipated quarter-final encounter tomorrow against Denmark’s Line Højmark Kjaersfeldt, the world number 25. The match promises to be one of the standout contests of the day, with the pair set to renew their rivalry in a repeat of this year’s European Championships gold medal match.
There is certainly plenty of history between the two players. Gilmour and Kjaersfeldt have faced each other 16 times on the international circuit, with the Scottish number one holding the advantage in their head-to-head record at 10–6. Their previous meetings have provided some memorable contests, and with a place in the semi-finals, and a medal guaranteed for the winner at stake, there is plenty to play for.
For Gilmour, tomorrow’s encounter represents another opportunity to demonstrate her credentials against one of Europe’s leading players and continue what has been a positive week in Germany. Having negotiated today’s challenge with authority, she will be looking to carry that momentum into what is expected to be a much tougher test.
The quarter-final is scheduled to be the second match on Court 2 tomorrow. Supporters will be able to follow the action live on BWF TV as Gilmour looks to take another step towards the latter stages of the tournament.
