HYLO Open Preview: Scottish Stars Set for Final Test of European Swing
26th October 2026 by Robert McLean
Scotland’s badminton stars are in the historic German city of Saarbrücken this week for the HYLO Open, as they prepare for the final stop of a gruelling European swing on the calendar. The HSBC BWF World Tour Super 500 event provides another valuable opportunity for Scotland’s leading players to test themselves against the elite of the sport.
Unfortunately, Alex Dunn has been forced to withdraw from the tournament through injury. Everyone wishes Alex a speedy recovery and hopes to see him back on court soon.
With play getting underway tomorrow, two Scottish pairings will take centre stage on the opening day, with challenging encounters awaiting both combinations.
Tough Opening Challenge for Torrance and MacPherson
Scottish women’s doubles number ones Ciara Torrance and Julie MacPherson face a formidable opening assignment as they take on tournament top seeds and world number six pairing Hsu and Lin of Chinese Taipei.
The two pairs have met just once previously on the international circuit, with the Taipei duo coming out on top in straight games at last year’s Orléans Masters, winning 21-18, 21-14.
Torrance and MacPherson will be determined to turn the tables this time around. While the draw has handed the Scots one of the toughest possible starts, an early upset would provide a significant boost and set the stage for a potential deep run in Germany.
The Grimley’s Ready for Familiar French Foes
Later on Tuesday, brothers Matt and Chris Grimley will face familiar opposition in the form of France’s Eloi Adam and Leo Rossi.
The French pair currently hold a narrow 2-1 advantage in the head-to-head record, adding another layer of intrigue to what promises to be a competitive encounter.
However, the Grimley twins have been in excellent form of late and will head into the contest with confidence. With previous meetings providing plenty of familiarity between the two sides, the Scots will be hoping their recent performances can help them level the rivalry and make a winning start to their HYLO Open campaign.
Gilmour Faces Rising American Talent
Wednesday sees the women’s singles take centre stage, with Scotland’s Kirsty Gilmour beginning her campaign against promising American teenager Ella Lin.
Already ranked 62nd in the world, Lin has been making strides on the international circuit and represents a stern opening test for the experienced Gilmour.
Kirsty will be looking to draw on her experience at the highest level to navigate the challenge and make a positive start to her tournament. With valuable ranking points and a place in the next round at stake, it promises to be an important opening encounter for the Scottish star.
Kindervater Back on Home Soil
The Scottish team will be supported throughout the week by National Head Coach Ingo Kindervater, who returns to his native Germany for the tournament.
His presence will provide valuable support as the players look to finish the European swing on a high against a strong international field.
