Japan Para Badminton International – Day 2 Roundup

9th September 2026 by Robert McLean

It was a challenging second day of action in Tokyo for Scotland’s two representatives, Andrew Davies and Owen Carmichael, as both players continued their group campaigns at the Japan Para Badminton International.

First up was Andrew Davies, who faced a tough test against India’s world number eight, Solaimalai. Andrew battled hard against his higher-ranked opponent and produced a spirited performance, but it was Solaimalai who came out on top, securing victory in two games.

The result leaves Andrew with one win and one defeat from his opening two group matches, with his final position still to be decided.

Next on court was Owen Carmichael, who took on Brazil’s world number 18 De Oliveira Costa. Owen put up a determined fight against another higher-ranked opponent, but was ultimately defeated in two games. The result leaves Owen with two defeats from his opening two group matches.

The final contest of the day saw the two Scots join forces in the men’s doubles, taking on Canada’s world number four pairing of Kendrick and Lightfoot. Andrew and Owen produced a strong showing against one of the world’s leading pairs, but the Canadian duo proved too strong, securing a straight-games victory.

Despite a difficult day, there is still plenty to play for on the final day of the group phase.

Andrew will await the outcome of Solaimalai’s match against Langelier to determine his final position in the group.

Owen will face Canada’s Hay, with the Scot looking to finish the group stage on a high.

Andrew and Owen will also team up once more in the men’s doubles, where they will take on Brazil’s De Oliveira Costa and Canada’s Xue, with the pair aiming to round off their doubles campaign with a victory.

With everything still to be decided, Scotland’s representatives will be back on court tomorrow looking to finish their group campaigns strongly.
