Badminton Scotland is delighted to announce the appointment of Spanish coach Jonhattan Martínez Maseda as its new National Junior Coach (NJC), marking another important step in the continued development of high-performance badminton in Scotland.
Jonhattan joins Badminton Scotland following an extensive career in the development of Spanish badminton. He has served as Head Coach of the national programme at the Asturias Performance Centre and led Badminton Oviedo in Spain’s top league, working with both international junior and senior players.
A representative for Spanish coaches on a number of committees, Jonhattan brings extensive experience of high-performance environments, alongside a strong commitment to coach development, collaboration and the creation of effective sporting structures.
Jonhattan will be based at the Sir Craig Reedie Centre, where his new role will focus on strengthening the pathway for Scotland’s emerging players and creating closer links between the junior and senior programmes.
National Head Coach Ingo Kindervater welcomed the appointment:
“I’m delighted to finally announce Jonhattan as our new NJC. He will fit in perfectly into our coaching team, and we have hired someone with exactly the right expertise and background for what we need in this position.
“I am convinced that he will have a major impact on our Junior Pathway in this newly created position, and I’m excited that we can now significantly improve the offering for our Junior Pathway players with this appointment.”
Speaking about his appointment, Jonhattan said:
“I want to build bridges between the senior squad and younger generations, while also coordinating new working strategies between coaches and clubs to support the development of the next generation of successful Scottish badminton players.
“I believe that working at the Sir Craig Reedie Centre will make it easier to develop new workstreams and establish a clear and effective Scottish badminton pathway.”
Known for his passionate and determined approach, as well as his strong belief in the importance of tactical development, Jonhattan is excited by the opportunity to contribute to the next generation of Scottish players.
He added:
“The Badminton Scotland senior team is currently performing at a high level and should serve as a beacon for younger players. Now is the time to push hard to produce a new generation of players capable of competing at the highest level.”
Jonhattan’s appointment further strengthens Badminton Scotland’s commitment to developing a clear, collaborative and high-performance pathway, supporting players from the junior ranks through to senior international competition.
