Malaysia Masters Preview

19th May 2026 by Robert McLean

The Scottish squad is once again testing itself against the very best on the international circuit this week as competition gets underway at the PERODUA Malaysia Masters in Kuala Lumpur.

As one of the key stops on the HSBC BWF World Tour calendar, the Super 500 event attracts many of the world’s leading players and partnerships, providing another major challenge for Scotland’s representatives following last week’s tournament in Thailand.

Action is already underway in the Malaysian capital, with Scotland’s players competing across both qualifying and main draw events in front of passionate badminton crowds at one of Asia’s most prestigious tournaments.

There was heartbreak in mixed doubles qualifying for Alex Dunn and Adam Pringle, who pushed Thai world number 48 pair Sukphun and Teeraratsakul all the way in a closely contested encounter. Despite the straight-sets defeat, the Scottish duo produced an encouraging performance, running the experienced Thai partnership close throughout both games and showing the fine margins that exist at this level of international competition.

The biggest Scottish success of the opening day so far has come on Court One, where Christopher Grimley and Matthew Grimley continued the excellent form they displayed during last week’s tournament in Thailand. The twins battled through a demanding three-set contest against exciting young Malaysian pair Faiq and Lok, ranked 69 in the world, producing another composed and determined display under pressure.

Their victory keeps alive hopes of a place in the main draw, with one more qualifying match now standing between the Scots and another opportunity to compete against the elite pairs on the World Tour. Having already shown strong momentum across recent weeks, the Grimleys will be confident of continuing their progress in Kuala Lumpur.

Attention will also turn later this morning to women’s doubles, where Julie MacPherson and Ciara Torrance begin their main draw campaign. The Scottish duo face a difficult opening assignment against Vietnamese pairing Fan and Yau, currently ranked world number 57, in what promises to be another highly competitive encounter.

MacPherson will also return to action in the mixed doubles competition, partnering Dunn tomorrow as the Scottish players continue a packed week of matches against world-class opposition.

Supporting the athletes throughout the tournament is experienced national coach Robert Blair. Blair’s experience both as a former international player and now as a coach remains invaluable as Scotland’s players continue to gain exposure at the highest levels of the sport.

The Malaysia Masters represents another important opportunity for the Scottish squad to build ranking points, develop consistency on the HSBC BWF World Tour, and continue gaining experience against many of badminton’s strongest nations.
