Malaysia Masters Review
20th May 2026 by Robert McLean
The Scottish contingent endured a challenging week at the PERODUA Malaysia Masters 2026 in Kuala Lumpur, but there were still plenty of positives to take from several encouraging performances against world-class opposition at one of the toughest stops on the BWF World Tour.
Following their excellent qualifying victory earlier in the week, the Grimley twins stepped into the main draw to face experienced French pairing Julian Maio and William Villeger in the round of 32. Although entering the match as underdogs, the French pair produced some of their best badminton of the season. Maio and Villeger ultimately progressed in straight games, 21-12, 21-15, but the experience gained at Super 500 level will undoubtedly prove valuable moving forward.
In mixed doubles, Alex Dunn and Julie MacPherson opened their campaign against exciting young Indian talents Sharma and Kanapuram. The Scots started brightly by taking the opening game 21-16, but the momentum shifted as the Indian pair responded strongly in a high-quality and fiercely contested encounter. Dunn and MacPherson pushed all the way before eventually falling 16-21, 21-14, 21-18 in a match that highlighted just how fine the margins are at the elite level of international badminton.
Julie MacPherson was also in action in the women’s doubles alongside Ciara Torrance. The Scottish pair came up against an inspired Vietnamese partnership in Fan and Yau, who controlled the match well to secure a 21-11, 21-13 victory.
While results did not quite fall in Scotland’s favour this week, the performances once again demonstrated the squad’s ability to compete against some of the strongest opposition on the international circuit. The Asian swing has provided invaluable experience, with several matches showing real signs of progress and competitiveness at Super 500 standard.
A special mention must also go to coach Robert Blair for his tireless work and support throughout the demanding Asian leg of the calendar.
Most of the squad will now enjoy a short break before returning to action later this summer at the Yonex US Open in Fullerton, California, followed by the DAIHATSU Japan Open in Tokyo.
