Medal Success and Stellar Performances from Scots in Sofia

6th October 2025 by Robert McLean

Scotland’s rising badminton stars made a strong impression at the Yonex Bulgarian Championships, delivering a string of standout performances and bringing home a well-earned medal from a highly competitive international field in Sofia.

Rachel Sugden was the standout performer of the week, securing a bronze medal in the women’s singles after a series of commanding wins. Sugden’s impressive run was halted in the semi-finals by India’s Durga Esha Kandrapu, with the Scot narrowly missing out on a place in the final. Nonetheless, her campaign showcased her growing prowess on the international stage.

In the men’s singles, both Matthew Waring and James Robertson reached the last 16, each putting in performances to be proud of. Waring pushed eventual champion and home favourite Dimitar Yanakiev to three sets in a thrilling contest, eventually falling 18‑21, 21‑17, 21‑18. Robertson faced a tough draw against Italy’s 6th seed Enrico Baroni, bowing out in straight sets but leaving with plenty of positives from his play throughout the week.

The men’s doubles pairing of Evan Kenny and Josh Taylor continued their fine form following a strong showing in Croatia, progressing to the quarter-finals in Sofia. Their campaign came to an end in a closely fought battle against Bulgaria’s own Ivan Rusev and Krasimir Todorov, but the duo once again demonstrated their growing partnership and consistency.

There was a slight disappointment in the mixed doubles, as Josh Taylor, teaming up with Katie Stewart, fell to Swiss duo Hugo Chanthankesone and Anic Metzger. Despite the early exit, the pair gained valuable experience against tough European opposition.

Overall, it was an incredibly positive week for the Scottish contingent, with performances across the board highlighting the depth of talent and the growing momentum of Scottish badminton on the international circuit.
