Meldrum and Clowes Aim for Main Draw in Caldas da Rainha
4th March 2026 by Robert McLean
The 61st Portugal International Championships gets underway this week in Caldas da Rainha, with two Scots set to test themselves against a strong international field.
Angus Meldrum and Malik Clowes are Scotland’s representatives in the men’s singles at the highly competitive International Series event, both beginning their campaigns in qualification as they bid to reach the main draw.
Meldrum is scheduled fourth on Court 3 this morning in the qualifying round of 128, where he will face Austria’s Pascal Cheng. It promises to be a challenging opener, with a place in the next round at stake against a deep and talented field.
Clowes, meanwhile, will close the day’s play on Court 2. Entering at the qualifying round of 64, he awaits confirmation of his opponent but knows that a demanding route lies ahead. The Scot will be aiming to reach the main draw from qualification for the first time, a milestone that would mark significant progress at senior international level.
Supporters can watch both Scottish players live throughout the week on Badminton Europe TV via the streaming platform at Badminton Europe TV.
With a highly talented field assembled in Portugal, it promises to be a stern test for both Scots as they seek to make their mark.
We wish Angus and Malik the very best of luck and encourage fans to stay tuned to our website and social media channels for a full review at the conclusion of the tournament.
