Mixed League underway in Dundee and Varsity derby clash

The Dundee Area Badminton mixed league got underway with a 2nd Division varsity derby clash between Dundee and St Andrews Universities.  Dundee only have one team in the mixed leagues this season and were too strong for their Fife counterparts in an 8-0 win.  Could Dundee University be one of the challengers for the Division 2 title this season?

There was another round of fixtures in the Gents and Ladies doubles leagues.  The Ladies league Division 1 had another big clash as Carnoustie faced NCR.  The Angus side had the victory clinched by game 4, running out 4-1 winners for their 2nd successive win to take an early lead at the top of the table. Maria Boyd was once again in cracking form for Carnoustie with 3 wins.

In the Ladies league Division 2, there was a local derby between newcomers David Lloyd 2 and Monifieth Grove and the sides couldn’t be separated throughout the match, with the 3-3 draw being a fair result.  Amy Sanders was making her debut for Monifieth Grove and it proved a good one as she won all her 3 games.

Roseangle got their Gents Division 1 campaign underway but went down to a 4-0 defeat to Forfar. Roseangle were still in the game going into the final round, but 2 wins for Forfar sealed it.

In Gents Division 2, there was a close affair between NCR 2 and Carnoustie.  Carnoustie took an early lead with a win in the opening game, but it was back to level pegging going into the final round and a win apiece in that had the match ending in a 2-2 draw.

Dundee University are the early Gents Division 3 leaders after a hard fought 2-1 win over Nomads 2.  The sides couldn’t be separated early on with a win apiece and 2 draws and it came down to an exciting final game decider with Cameron Hamson and Andrei Ciprian Macarie sealing a 2-1 victory for the students with a 21-16, 21-12 win.

A new look Monifieth Grove 2 side got their Division 4 campaign underway with a match against newcomers Arbroath who included 2 players from last season’s Monifieth Grove 2 side.  It was Arbroath that took an early lead with a win in Game 2 and they held a 2-1 lead going in to the final round of games, where a close run 21-18, 21-19 win by Magnes Alphey and Ben Sim earned a 2-2 draw for Monifieth Grove 2.  The draw moved Arbroath clear at the top of the table albeit they have played a game more than all the other teams.
