POLYTRON Indonesia Open – Review
4th June 2026 by Robert McLean
Kirsty Gilmour concluded her campaign at the POLYTRON Indonesia Open with an encouraging performance against higher-ranked South Korean opponent Sim in Jakarta.
In what was the first meeting between the two players on the BWF World Tour, Gilmour delivered a determined display in challenging conditions, pushing her opponent throughout a closely contested match. Despite her efforts, Sim edged the encounter in straight games, winning 21-17, 21-18.
The scoreline reflected the competitive nature of the match, with Gilmour staying within touching distance throughout and demonstrating the resilience and quality that have been hallmarks of her game. Against one of the world’s leading players, she showed she can compete at the highest level and continue to challenge the sport’s elite athletes.
The Indonesia Open marked the end of a demanding Asian swing for Gilmour. While results may not have fully reflected her ambitions, there were several positive performances across the tour that will provide confidence heading into the next phase of the season. Competing against world-class opposition has offered valuable experience and highlighted areas of progress as she continues to build momentum.
Attention now turns to the DAIHATSU Japan Open in Tokyo, where Gilmour will return to competitive action in just over six weeks’ time. The break provides an opportunity to recover, reset, and prepare for another important tournament on the international calendar.
Special thanks go to coach Rajiv Ouseph for his support and guidance throughout the Asian leg of the season. His contribution has been invaluable as Gilmour continues her preparations for the challenges ahead.
Although the Jakarta campaign ended in defeat, there were plenty of encouraging signs for the months to come, with Gilmour leaving Indonesia having once again proven her ability to compete with the very best in the world.
