Scotland’s Best Set for German Test at the Yonex German Open
23rd February 2026 by Robert McLean
Scotland’s leading shuttlers are set for an exciting week in Germany as they compete at the Yonex German Open, an HSBC BWF World Tour Super 300 event staged in the picturesque city of Mülheim an der Ruhr.
With a world-class field assembled, Scotland’s best will be looking to make their mark when play gets underway tomorrow, as the Men’s Doubles and Women’s Doubles take centre stage.
In the Men’s Doubles, Alex Dunn and Adam Pringle have been handed a stern opening assignment in the round of 32. The Scots will face fifth seeds Chi-Lin Wang and Hsiang Chieh Chiu of Chinese Taipei, a formidable pairing who will start as favourites. Dunn will also be back on court later in the week in mixed doubles, making for a busy schedule.
Also in Men’s Doubles action on day one, brothers Matt and Chris Grimley take on another highly ranked duo from Chinese Taipei in seventh seeds Jhe-Huei Lee and Po-Hsuan Yang. With both pairs known for their aggressive, fast-paced style, this encounter promises to be a tightly contested battle.
In the Women’s Doubles, Julie MacPherson and Ciara Torrance begin their campaign against the winners of Qualifying Match 1. The Scottish pair will be aiming to settle quickly and build momentum in a competitive draw.
From Wednesday onwards, all events will be in full swing, with Kirsty Gilmour spearheading Scotland’s challenge in the Women’s Singles.
Gilmour faces a finely balanced round of 32 clash against Japan’s Manami Suizu, currently ranked world number 36. With just six ranking places separating the two players, this matchup has all the ingredients of a thriller and could hinge on the smallest of margins.
In the Mixed Doubles, Alex Dunn and Julie MacPherson will look to build on a string of impressive recent performances. The Scottish duo open their campaign against promising Ukrainians Oleksii Titov and Yevheniia Kantemyr, a young partnership eager to make their own breakthrough on the HSBC BWF World Tour.
Overseeing Scotland’s campaign is Head Coach Ingo Kindervater, who will guide the team in familiar territory as they look to navigate a challenging week against some of the sport’s elite.
With high-quality opposition across every discipline and valuable ranking points on offer, the stage is set for an enthralling week of action in Mülheim.
