Scotland’s Stars Set for World Championships Showdown in Paris

25th August 2025 by Robert McLean

Scotland’s top badminton talent begins their World Championships campaign today at the prestigious Adidas Arena in Paris — one of the marquee events on the global badminton calendar. With the world’s elite converging on the French capital, our players are primed and ready to make their mark on the international stage.

Flying the flag for Scotland are a strong and determined squad: Kirsty Gilmour, Alex Dunn, Ciara Torrance, Adam Pringle, Julie MacPherson, Rachel Andrew, Chris Grimley, and Matt Grimley.

Supporting the team courtside are National Head Coach Ingo Kindervater and a welcome returning face, former senior squad standout Sarah Sidebottom, who joins the coaching team for the week.

Day One Lineup: Eyes on the Court

Kirsty Gilmour gets Scotland’s campaign underway, facing Uganda’s Fadilah Shamika Mohamed Rafi (world ranked 166) in the fourth match on Court 3. Gilmour, with her wealth of experience and fighting spirit, will be looking to set the tone for the rest of the squad.

Following her match, Scotland’s top-ranked men’s doubles duo, Matt and Chris Grimley, take centre stage as the eighth match on Court 3. They’re set to take on rising Spanish stars Daniel Franco and Rodrigo Sanjurjo, currently ranked 90th in the world, in what promises to be a fast-paced and tactical encounter.

The action continues with Alex Dunn and Adam Pringle, who team up for their first-ever World Championship appearance together. They’ll face Swiss pair Yann Orteu and Minh Quang Pham (world no. 112) in the 12th match on Court 4, hoping to showcase their chemistry and skill under pressure.

Wrapping up Scotland’s day one schedule are women’s doubles stalwarts Julie MacPherson and Ciara Torrance. The top-ranked Scottish pair meet Sri Lanka’s promising young duo Isuri Attanayake and Sithumi De Silva, just 16 years old but already climbing the rankings at world no. 108. Experience will be key as the Scottish pair look to navigate a tricky opening round.

Looking Ahead

Scotland’s Mixed Doubles campaign begins tomorrow with two strong pairings stepping onto the court. Rachel Andrew and Adam Pringle will get their campaign underway, joined by experienced duo Alex Dunn and Julie MacPherson, who are also set to begin their challenge for World Championship success.
